Larry Eustachy roamed the halls of CONSOL Energy Center on Wednesday afternoon with a can of Diet Coke in his right hand.
If you know his story, which you probably do considering all that has been written about him this season and the infamous pictures of him drinking cheap beer with college students that got him fired at Iowa State nearly a decade ago, you know that’s about all he drinks these days.
Eustachy gave up alcohol when he came to Southern Mississippi. He wanted to start over, and has found redemption this year by taking the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Tournament.
Some might have expected him to tire of repeated questions about his story. Southern Miss does play Kansas State tomorrow, after all. I can picture plenty of coaches asking the media to focus on that. Eustachy did that some today, throwing credit to his players. He says they are the reason his story is relevant.
But he doesn’t mind talking about his comeback tale. Not one bit.
“After I was fired at Iowa State, I took a hard look at myself and realized I had to make some changes,” Eustachy said. “I'm really proud of those changes. I've become better at everything I do: a dad, a son a coach. I've settled into a new way of life that is much more enjoyable than the old way.” (more…)
