Ask most folks around Wichita, and they’ll tell you 2011 was a quiet year for tornadoes in Kansas.
And they’d be right – and wrong.
What they mean is that no tornadoes hit Wichita. But there were 68 tornadoes around Kansas last year. That’s 8 more than the 60-year average of 60 between 1950 and 2010.
But it’s also the lowest number in a decade, according to records compiled by the National Weather Service. Only one tornado touched down in Sedgwick County last year – June 9 near Colwich.
Tornadoes killed 3 people and injured 7 others last year in Kansas. The first tornado of the year touched down on Feb. 27 in Cowley County and the last on Oct. 8 in Haskell County.
Tornadoes touched down on 17 different days last year, including a high of 16 on June 20.
