In a Newsweek commentary headlined "I Miss Bob Dole," former Clinton adviser Paul Begala recalls how the former Senate majority leader helped stop the insanity of the 1995 government shutdown when he declared, "Enough is enough. I don't see any sense in what we've been doing." Begala wishes that the no-nonsense Kansas Republican, who will turn 88 on Friday, were in the room for the current debt-ceiling negotiations. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, may want to be Dole this time. But "poor Boehner has enough of (House Majority Leader Eric) Cantor's knives in his back to open a steak house," Begala writes. He concludes: "Perhaps some in today's Republican Party believe that the worse things get for the American economy, the better things get for Republican politicians. They need to heed the Sage of Russell, Kan.: Enough is enough."
