Airbus plans to announce a larger, more powerful engine for its A350-1000 airliner at the Paris Air Show, according to aviation analyst Scott Hamilton on his blog, Leeham.net.
The plane rivals Boeing’s 777-300.
The higher-thrust engines will add about 500 n.m. of range to the A350-1000, Hamilton said. Airbus isn’t enlarging the airframe but it will increase the gross takeoff weight.
Development of the engine will delay the plane’s entry into service from 2015 to late 2016, he said.
Airbus had no comment, Hamilton reported.
Boeing has been waiting to decide what to do in response to the A350-1000, which competes with its 777-300ER, until a detailed design definition of the Airbus plane emerges.
