There’s a picture in one of the stairwells at the Lahaina Civic Center of Ralph Sampson with players from the 1982 Chaminade team at a recent reunion. That Chaminade team, then an NAIA member, upset No. 1 Virginia in perhaps the most shocking upset in college basketball. That story is the source of much of the fame that the Silverswords enjoy. Each fall, Chaminade plays big-name opponents in the Maui Invitational and each fall the stories are told.
That game was played in Honolulu, not a part of this tournament. This story from USA Today is an excellent refresher or introduction to the circumstances.
Chaminade is located in Honolulu and is a Catholic college with an enrollment of 1,100. Now an NCAA Division II school, it made the NCAA Tournament under coach Matt Mahar in 2006 and 2008.
