A double dose of big news out of the MIAA today with Pittsburg State hiring MIAA commish Jim Johnson as its athletic director and … then later in the day the league extended two invites to Central Oklahoma and Northeastern (Okla.) State to join up. In other words, they pulled a Willy Wonka and slipped them a golden ticket.
The MIAA will have 12 teams with the addition of Lincoln (Mo.) this year, and with two invites out — assuming the two Oklahoma schools accept — and Lindenwood (Mo.) trying to get in, the league appears headed towards breaking up into two, 8-team divisions if they can get Nebraska-Kearney in, too.
It seems like the rule for college athletics — you don’t expand, you don’t survive — seems to extend to the smaller divisions also. I think if this particular super-division becomes reality the competition will be unbelievable, and make the best NCAA Division II conference in the country even better.
