The "8 Wonders of Kansas People," the latest state ranking by the Kansas Sampler Foundation, won't include some influential native Kansans, the Hutchinson News noted. That's because the nomination criteria exclude those who were connected to other "8 Wonders" contests (hence President Eisenhower and photographer Gordon Parks are ineligible). Also, nominees have to be dead or at least retired (so former Sen. Bob Dole could be eligible but no current politician or industry leader could). And because a purpose of the contest is to encourage travel, there must be something to see in relation to the person nominated, such as a memorial or statue. Kansas Sampler is taking nominations through July 31 at www.kansassampler.org. It will announce the 24 finalists on Sept. 9. The final eight will be unveiled Oct. 28.
