Ninety-eight percent of Local Lodge 839 Machinists union members voting Saturday approved a strike sanction as contract negotiations with Spirit AeroSystems continues.
The strike sanction is a legal and procedural vote required by the Machinists’ Constitution. It gives the union bargaining power by giving it the right to call for a strike should members turn down an offer.
“It does not mean there will be a strike,” union officials said.
The current contract expires June 25.
The union and Spirit are exploring the possibility of negotiating a new model of a labor agreement to increase job security and save Wichita jobs, the union said.
“The bottom line is jobs, jobs, jobs,” District 70 directing business representative Steve Rooney said in a statement.
