The mercury reached 60 degrees today – the first time it’s been that warm in Wichita since late November.
The magic moment happened at about 3:10 p.m. today, said Vanessa Pearce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wichita.
“We didn't do anything crazy to celebrate,” she said.
But folks around Wichita may have been tempted. It’s been too chilly around here for too long.
In fact, this was the first meteorological winter since records began being kept in Wichita (that would be 1888, when Grover Cleveland was president) that the temperature never touched 60 between December 1 and February 28.
Wichita hadn’t seen 60 since November 28, and the temperature slipped back into the 50s a short time later. But the city won’t have to wait long for a repeat. Highs on Friday may touch 60, Pearce said, and figure to climb into the low 60s over the weekend.
