Rose Hill is already in, and Tuesday night 11 other soccer teams will join the Rockets by advancing to the state tournaments’ final four.
Rose Hill handled Thomas More Prep 4-1 in the only Monday night quarterfinal. The Rockets will be a No. 1 seed in the Class 4A bracket.
The Rockets have the talent to win the tournament, but they will have to be at their best defensively for both games. The one thing to worry about is a possible meeting with Lenexa St. James. St. James (9-9) travels to Louisburg (15-3) for its quarterfinal match.
I don’t know much about this year’s St. James team, but I know the program has really good history and has played a pretty tough schedule. Rose Hill defeated St. James 1-0 in the semifinals last season, that St. James squad was 7-11.
Quarterfinal picks: St. James, Maranatha Academy and Independence.
Is there anyone in the state that would beat St. Thomas Aquinas?
I don’t think so, but then again anything’s possible (KG voice).
The Hutchinson at Liberal match will be a good one. Hutch plays solid defense and has the type of discipline that you need to beat a quick-scoring Liberal squad. Call me a homer, but I also like Newton. I think people have overlooked the Railers this season and they are on a mission, fueled by a resilient comeback against Kapaun in the regional final.
Quarterfinal picks: Aquinas, Bishop Miege, Hutchinson, Newton
Class 6AAll eyes will be on tonight’s Dodge City-Maize match. The Demons handed the Eagles, who many thought would walk into the state tournament undefeated, its lone loss to end the regular season.
I think its good for teams to lose at least once in the regular season. Going into the postseason undefeated is a great accomplishment, but it also adds a lot of stress and pressure.
In the other local quarterfinal, East travels to Topeka to face Washburn Rural. East defeated rival Southeast on Monday and I’m not sure how it will handle having to turn around and play one of the best teams in the state.
Quarterfinal picks: Olathe South, BV West, Washburn Rural, Maize.
