Game over. Umpires call it. Neither coach looks happy. No game. No stats. In all, a fitting end to the baseball rivalry here in the Cedar Valley. Rain and lots of it.
UNI left fielder Travis Bennett spent a few minutes talking to WSU coach Gene Stephenson after the game. He is a junior looking for a place to play as a senior. He is hitting .340 with 14 doubles and three home runs.
More rain. Lightning. Tarp is coming back on. Mandatory 30-minute delay due to lightning.
We’re playing again.
Never miss a local story.
WSU will bat in the fifth with one out and McKeever at the plate. I don’t think Lowell will come back. Dalton Banwart is warming up.
Players are taking off the tarp. We will try to squeeze in baseball.
Now the players are off the field. The tarp is coming on. We’re in for a delay in the fifth inning.
Heavy rains. They are playing, for some reason. Looks unsafe. They need to get the tarp on.
UNI 4, WSU 4 (bottom 4th) - The Shockers tie it . Lassley missed a three-run homer by a few feet. Instead, he doubles off the second level of the wall in left to drive in one run. Tyler Grimes drives in the tying run with an infield single. The Shockers still had two on with one out until Jones bounced into a double play.
UNI 4, WSU 2 (top 4th) - Lowell hits a batter and balks him in from third. Jones saves a run with a perfect one-hopper to the plate to get Johnson and end the inning.
UNI 3, WSU 2 (bottom 3rd) - We’re seeing the mental mistakes that killed the Shockers all year. In the second, Chris O’Brien didn’t run hard and turned a double into a single off the wall. In the third, Jone singled to lead off the inning. He was thrown out at second when Baez didn’t swing on a hit and run.
UNI 3, WSU 2 (top 3rd) - Doubles by Gabe Schultz and Brett Douglas put the Panthers ahead. The weather remains iffy, so neither team wants to trail after five innings in case it gets bad.
WSU 2, UNI 1 (top 2nd) - A leadoff infield single and a walk turn into a run for UNI. Jeff Taliaferro’s two-out single scores the run.
WSU 2, UNI 0 - Ryan Jones homers to drive Tyler Grimes. His first homer since April 4 against Illinois State.
Lineups - Josh Rosecrans will DH. Taylor Brown is in left.
