Coleman Middle School will get a $1.35 million classroom addition and storm shelter if Wichita school board members approve a proposed bond project Monday.
Board members will consider entering into a contract with Sauerwein Construction to build the addition at Coleman, 1544 N. Governeour, near 13th and Rock Road. The plan calls for adding four classrooms, including a lab designed for Project Lead the Way, a STEM education program.
The classroom addition would be hardened as a Federal Emergency Management Agency-approved storm shelter, said Kenton Cox of Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey, the district’s bond manager. If approved, construction would begin this spring and be completed by the start of school in 2016, he said.
The project also calls for a controlled-access entrance at Coleman, Cox said. Upgrades to the middle school’s auditorium were completed in an earlier phase of the 2008 bond issue.
Also on Monday, board members will consider a proposal to increase school lunch prices. Prices would rise by 10 cents for elementary and middle-school students and by 15 cents for high school students, according to the proposal.
If approved, the increase would go into effect July 1.
Full-price elementary school lunches would cost $2.15; middle school, $2.30; and high school, $2.45. The adult lunch price would increase from $3.40 to $3.45.
Student breakfast prices would not increase. The price of an adult breakfast would go from $1.95 to $2.
Reduced-price lunches would remain at 40 cents for students who qualify.
According to the proposal on Monday’s school board agenda, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the nationwide school lunch program, has recommended the increases to ensure the district is in compliance with the agency’s requirement for equity in school lunch pricing.
Board members also will hear from leaders of the Tri-County Sports League, who plan to recommend that schools award regular varsity athletic letters to special-needs students who meet participation requirements for their league.
The Wichita school board meets at 6 p.m. Monday at the North High lecture hall, 1437 Rochester, near 13th and Waco.
