A man suspected of robbing two Wichita hotels over Memorial Day weekend has been identified and is being held on unrelated charges in another state, the Wichita Police Department said Thursday on its social media pages.
The news comes a day after the agency released surveillance photos of the 23-year-old man robbing the Extended Stay America Hotel, in the 9400 block of East Corporate Hills Drive, on Saturday, and Monday morning’s holdup of the Days Inn Hotel, in the 7300 block of East Kellogg. The photos show a younger, light-skinned black or Hispanic man wearing a ball cap and a tank top that says “Suns Out Guns Out” on the front.
He’s armed in some of the images.
In the Extended Stay America robbery, the man walked in and demanded money from a 69-year-old woman. During the Days Inn robbery, he took cash from a register and a purse. Police said Wednesday they thought the robberies were connected.
The man is currently jailed in Missouri, Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said in response to questions about the case. Local detectives, she said, plan to present their investigation into the Wichita hotel robberies to prosecutors for possible criminal charging at a later date.
Woodrow said it wasn’t a public tip that lead to the man’s identity and location, but the department is “thankful for the community’s assistance” anyway.
