The two people who died as the result of a murder/suicide in northeast Wichita on Sunday were a pregnant woman and her boyfriend, according to police.
Lt. Todd Ojile of the Wichita Police Department said Aris Brown, 24, shot Antreese Bland, 21, to death before turning a gun on himself at a home Sunday in the 900 block of North Glendale.
Police received a report of a shooting at the home shortly before 3 p.m. on Sunday. Bland was about seven months into her pregnancy, Ojile said.
Never miss a local story.
The two had been in a relationship for about a year, Ojile said, though Bland had recently moved into the residence on North Glendale by herself.
“Sometime in the morning hours, Mr. Brown came to the residence,” Ojile said. “We do not know what happened, but at around 1 p.m., Ms. Bland went to a neighbor’s house and tried to contact her family by using their phone.”
Bland was unable to reach her family at that time, Ojile said, though family members did try unsuccessfully to contact her shortly after that. Members of Bland’s family then went to the home and discovered Bland and Brown, who were dead.
Ojile said police had contact with the couple on “numerous occasions in the past few months.” Brown had recently been charged in a criminal threats case that involved Bland, Ojile said.
Ojile said that police think Brown was the father of Bland’s unborn child. Had he not killed himself, Brown could have been charged with the death of the unborn child, said police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow.
According to Kansas Department of Corrections records, Brown was convicted on a 2014 drug possession charge. Not including the unborn child – which Woodrow said is not counted, according to police statistics – Bland’s killing represents the 15th homicide in Wichita this year.
