An electronics buy arranged online ended with a man losing about $1,000 in cash when he was robbed at gunpoint early Tuesday.
Wichita police Officer Charley Davidson said the 36-year-old had arranged to meet a woman he didn’t know in the area of Central and Oliver at 12:30 a.m. to purchase the items.
But instead of the smooth transaction he anticipated, he was met by two masked men armed with handguns.
“The victim stated that cash was taken from him, and he fled in his vehicle,” Davidson said.
During his escape, the 36-year-old crashed into a house in the 4400 block of East Central. He was taken to a Wichita hospital for treatment but has since been released, Davidson said.
Police are looking for the two masked men and the woman, Davidson said. He didn’t have a detailed description of them.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Wichita police detectives at 316-268-4407 or Wichita-Sedgwick County Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. Crime Stoppers tips, which are anonymous, can also be submitted online at www.wichitasedgwickcountycrimestoppers.com or by text messaging TIP217 and the information to 274637 (CRIMES).
“You always want to be careful when you’re doing online transactions and making purchases online,” Davidson said, adding that it’s also a good idea to take a trusted friend or family member along, too.
“Pick a busy time (and) a well-lit area to try to do those exchanges just for your safety and the safety of others.”
