Sedgwick County inmate released by mistake is found at Kanopolis Lake

An inmate who was mistakenly released from the Sedgwick County Jail last week is back in custody, authorities announced Tuesday.

Chad Allen Engel, 33, was found Friday at Kanopolis Lake by an Ellsworth County sheriff’s deputy. Engel was arrested on a McPherson County warrant, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said in a prepared statement.

Engel is being held in McPherson County, where he was wanted for a drug-related conviction. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on July 2 on traffic charges and the McPherson County warrant, Easter said.

After the traffic charges were dropped, authorities have said, Engel was waiting in the booking area on July 8 to be transferred to McPherson County sheriff’s deputies. He was dressed in street clothes, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. When a detention corporal saw the man in street clothes, he assumed Engel was being released and escorted him out of the building.

The Sedgwick County case concerning Engel’s escape will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of additional charges, Easter said.
