A Wichita man has pleaded guilty to several charges linked to the attempted hijacking of a vehicle with a woman and young child inside last March.

Bunice Howard Jr., 27, pleaded to aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, attempted robbery, aggravated endangering a child, theft and two counts of criminal trespass Tuesday in Sedgwick County District Court. The crimes occurred on March 10 near 11th and Volutsia.

A 22-year-old woman was stopped at 11th and Volutsia at about 8:40 p.m. on March 10 when Howard jumped head-first through the open driver’s window, police said at the time of the incident. Startled, the woman accelerated to try to dislodge her intruder, but Howard grabbed the steering wheel to try to get control of the car.

The tussle over the steering wheel caused the car to strike a curb and then crash into a house at 1228 N. Volutsia, southwest of 13th and Hillside. The driver and her 2-year-old daughter were injured in the crash.

Howard fled the scene before officers could arrive, then tried to take car keys from a 65-year-old woman in the 1200 block of North Hillside. He later forced his way into a house there before being pushed outside.

He was arrested shortly after that and taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of a serious cut on his arm. Before trying to steal the car from the woman at 11th and Volutsia, Howard stole an unattended car left running at 1116 E. Bayley and broke out a back window of a house in the 1100 block of North Grove, according to police documents.

Howard is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 18 by Judge David Dahl.
