Prosecutors have charged a 23-year-old man with sexually abusing a child earlier this week.
Valentae E. Adams, of Wichita, made his first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court on Thursday afternoon on one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. A criminal complaint filed in the case accuses Adams of engaging in “lewd fondling or touching” of a 4-year-old on Sunday. Wichita police learned of the alleged crime Tuesday, according to an agency report, after a woman called to say her daughter had been touched “while she was sleeping” overnight.
The girl, the report says, was taken to Wesley Medical Center then to the Exploited and Missing Child Unit for an interview. The suspect in the case was also interviewed at EMCU, the report says. Adams was jailed Tuesday in connection with the case, a Sedgwick County Jail booking report shows.
Adams is due in court May 8 for a preliminary hearing. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
Aggravated indecent liberties with a child younger than 14 is a Jessica’s Law crime. A person convicted of certain child sex crimes under the law is subject to a life prison sentence without parole eligibility for 25 years.
