Two people have died in Augusta in what police said Friday was a murder-suicide.

A boy called 911 at 9:41 p.m. Thursday to report shots being fired in the house at 1235 Helen, said Tyler Brewer, director of public safety in Augusta.

“He had locked himself in a bedroom,” Brewer said. “He heard his mother scream.”

The child told the dispatcher he heard multiple shots, Brewer said. The dispatcher was able to talk the 12-year-old boy into crawling out a bedroom window, where Augusta police officers – who had arrived at the house on the southwest corner of Summit and Helen – took him to safety, Brewer said.

The officers heard no gunshots following their arrival.

Officers tried calling the house and then used a bullhorn to try to communicate, Brewer said. A team of law enforcement officers that included Butler County sheriff’s deputies used the back door to gain entry into the house. Inside, they found a man and woman dead.

They have been identified as Gary Weaver, 45, and Erin Weaver, 31. Evidence suggests Gary Weaver shot his wife and then killed himself, police said.

The boy who called 911 is now with his biological father, Brewer said. Gary Weaver was his stepfather, an Augusta Public Safety spokeswoman said.

No other children were inside the house when police arrived. There were no previous reports to police of domestic violence or other police calls at that residence, Brewer said.

It’s the first murder in Augusta since 2010, Brewer said.
