One of the defendants facing capital murder charges in the shooting of a Valley Center-area couple is arguing that his statement to detectives should be suppressed because he was under the influence of narcotics.
Anthony Bluml, the 19-year-old adopted son of Melissa and Roger Bluml, has filed a handwritten “Motion to Suppress Evidence” saying he was “not in complete control of his mental faculties” when he was questioned. He said detectives went ahead with questioning after he “stated clearly that he was under the influence of narcotics.”
His motion was filed in Sedgwick County District Court on Thursday.
He said he needed “a day to give a presentation” so he could “show without a doubt” that he was under the influence of narcotics on the day of questioning.

His defense lawyer couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.
Prosecutors on Jan. 3 filed capital murder charges against Anthony Bluml and three others, accused in the fatal shooting of the couple. Also charged are his 35-year-old biological mother, Kisha Schaberg, and two of his former Valley Center High School classmates, Andrew Ellington and Braden Smith.
On the night of Nov. 15, authorities found the Blumls critically wounded outside their rural Sedgwick County home after an apparent robbery. Each had a gunshot wound to the head.
Melissa Bluml, a 53-year-old bank vice president, died the next day. Roger Bluml, 48, died about five weeks after the shooting.
The capital murder charges mean the defendants could face the death penalty.
The four defendants each remain in jail on a $2 million bond.
In addition to the murder charges, the defendants also face charges of aggravated robbery, burglary and theft.
Schaberg’s girlfriend has told The Eagle that Anthony Bluml reunited with Schaberg in San Diego around midsummer after the two had communicated through social media.
Smith, who lived in Park City, went with Anthony Bluml to California. Those two and Schaberg drove from San Diego to the Wichita area about two weeks before the shooting, the girlfriend said.
