The condition of a 26-year-old Eureka woman wounded in a Greenwood County shooting that killed her mother and stepfather has been upgraded to serious, a Wesley Medical Center spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Law enforcement officials are still searching for Kevin Robert Welsh, 35. He is a suspect in the Oct. 2 fatal shooting of Keith Kriesel, 54, and his 52-year-old wife, Sheila, and the shooting of the 26-year-old woman, the Kansas Attorney General’s Office said.
Gov. Sam Brownback on Wednesday authorized a $5,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of Welsh, his office said. Anyone with information is asked to call 800-572-7463 or 911.
Welsh is armed and thought to be in Greenwood County, the attorney general’s office said.
Greenwood County sheriff’s deputies were en route to the Kriesels’ home southeast of Eureka on a report of a possible burglary when a victim called 911 saying that shots had been fired.
The deputies found that the husband and wife had been shot, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The 26-year-old woman was later shot multiple times and crashed a vehicle. She was in critical condition at the time she was taken to Wesley.
Greenwood County court records show that Welsh was facing a preliminary hearing later this month on three counts of kidnapping, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a criminal threat, stemming from an Aug. 23 incident. He had posted bond on Sept. 3.
