There has been a rash of burglaries and thefts in an area of Sedgwick County west of Derby, a sheriff’s official said Wednesday.
In the past 30 days, 17 thefts or burglaries have been counted in the area, starting just west of Derby and between that city and Haysville, Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. David Mattingly said.
The Sheriff’s Office has increased patrols in the area, he said.
One of the cases involves someone breaking into a storage building between 11 p.m. Sunday and 6:50 a.m. Monday on residential property in the 4400 block of East 83rd Street South, he said. The burglar stole two shotguns, a 40-inch television and a can of change. The loss was $2,265.
Mattingly said residents should make sure they lock doors and secure garages and report any suspicious activity to 911. Property crimes investigators can be contacted by calling 316-660-5300.
Investigators think the crimes could have been committed by the same burglar or a couple groups, Mattingly said. “We have a decent idea of a suspect,” he said.
