Three people are in the Sedgwick County Jail accused of drug charges, mail theft and unlawful use of financial cards.

The 49-year-old man, 47-year-old woman and 27-year-old man are accused of breaking into mailboxes at area apartment complexes. Lt. Doug Nolte said a police dog also smelled drugs on them when they were stopped by police.

Police have said there have been 25 mailbox break-ins citywide in the past month, mostly likely by thieves looking for income tax refund checks.

Residents of three apartment complexes have reported their mailboxes or mail rooms broken into twice each since April 13. Two occurred early Wednesday morning, police said.

The complexes are Eaglerock Village Apartment Complex, 7627 E. 37th St. North; Remington Apartments, 7272 E. 37th St. North; and MacArthur’s Lake Apartments, 727 MacArthur Road.

The three suspects are accused of possession of methamphetamines and other drug-related charges.

An 18-year-old Wichita man was arrested earlier this week in connection with one of the thefts at McArthur’s. He has been charged in Sedgwick District Court with six felony counts of forgery and one count of misdemeanor theft.
