Wichita police are investigating the shooting of a 29-year-old woman who two burglars shot using her own gun, police say.
The shooting happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday in the 11000 block of W. Hadden Court, in southwest Wichita, near Pawnee and Maize Road.
The woman was home alone when the two men broke into the house, according to Lt. Brian White, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.
“She confronted them with her firearm,” White said. “In the struggle that ensued, she was shot.”
The woman was able to walk to the home of a neighbor, who called 911; emergency and law enforcement authorities arrived soon after.
The woman was rushed in serious but stable condition to a hospital.
According to White, the woman did not know the men. The suspects remain at large.
For more than an hour after the shooting, the west Wichita neighborhood was sealed by police as officers canvassed the neighborhood, talking with residents.
White said the investigation is ongoing. He would not comment of what, if anything, the two burglars took from the house.
