Wichita police are investigating whether an armed man who stole a Mercedes at gunpoint on Rock Road on Tuesday night might be linked to a series of crimes earlier this week.
A 24-year-old woman had just pulled up to At the Beach Tanning at 314 N. Rock Road shortly before 9 p.m. on Tuesday when a man approached, pointed a gun at her and ordered her out of the gray Mercedes, Lt. Joe Schroeder said. The man forced her to lie on the ground as he got into the car and then drove off on Rock Road.
The car was later located in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1000 block of South Woodlawn by a private security guard who had been monitoring police radio traffic, Schroeder said. Nothing had been stolen from the car, he said.
“It’ll be compared with other robberies” to see if they’re connected, Schroeder said. “This is the first time we’ve actually had a vehicle taken.”
The suspect is a white man in his 30s, the woman told police. He is about 5-feet-5 and 130 pounds. He was unshaven, with the chin stubble a light brown color. He wore a black jacket with a gray hoody on underneath it.
There were three robberies in south and west Wichita between Monday night and early Tuesday morning. In all three cases, a gunman approached people outside their vehicles and left in a vehicle with a loud muffler, in at least one instance driven by a female.
No accomplices or second vehicle were mentioned in the theft of the Mercedes, Schroeder said.
