He just couldn’t resist.
An 18-year-old man who was sitting in the back seat of a patrol car early Thursday morning after reporting the theft of his car “started helping himself to items in the police car,” Lt. Doug Nolte said.
The white 2000 Honda Civic had been stolen shortly after 1 a.m. in the 1800 block of North Woodland. That is southwest of 21st and Waco.
What the man didn’t know is that anyone taken to police investigations for questioning has to empty their pockets. Out came prepaid debit cards, batteries, small electronics and business cards belonging to an officer.
“The detectives thought this was a little bit odd,” Nolte said.
They contacted the police supervisor whose car the man had been warming himself in and learned those items were missing from that vehicle. So the victim of an auto theft was ultimately booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of theft, Nolte said.
The man’s car was found a short time later and the driver arrested, he said.
