Wichita police overnight investigated the death of a woman who was stabbed late Thursday, Sedgwick County dispatchers said.
The stabbing happened at around 10:30 p.m. in the 4900 block of E. Shadybrook, a dispatch supervisor said. That’s just southeast of 21st Street and Oliver, near Wichita State University.
The victim — a woman in her 20s — was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center with multiple stab wounds to her chest, authorities said. She was unresponsive after sustaining the injuries, according to the dispatch supervisor.
A second dispatcher confirmed early Friday morning that the woman had died.
Further details were not immediately forthcoming from authorities after the stabbing occurred.
At the scene overnight, several Wichita police cars surrounded a three-story building, identified by a sign posted outside as Shadybrook Senior Apartments, 4925 Shadybrook. There was no crime scene tape and most police officers immediately walked inside of the building after they arrived.
Some civilians stepped outside to smoke or to make cellphone calls while the investigation was ongoing. A few were escorted to police cars and driven away. None were handcuffed.
A crime scene investigation van arrived at the scene shortly before 1:30 a.m.
Police had not released any information on a possible suspect in the case, the dispatch supervisor said late Thursday. It’s also unknown whether the victim’s wounds were self-inflicted, she said.
