The knock on the door came just after 1 a.m. on that April night two years ago.
Chris Jones came out of a back room of his south Wichita apartment, looked through the peep hole, then opened the door.
The man standing at the door immediately opened fire, striking Jones in the upper torso several times, Lt. Todd Ojile said. Jones, 55, was pronounced dead a short time later at local hospital.
Two years later, Ojile said, police still have no motive and no suspects in Jones’ murder.
Jones’ estranged wife was watching television in the living room and Jones and his girlfriend were in a back room together when the shooter knocked on the door of the apartment at 2250 S. Oliver early on the morning of April 2, 2010. Neither woman got a good look at the shooter.
