A police standoff with a man wanted for a violent crime ended Thursday afternoon when the SWAT unit entered a home on North Market and found him hiding in the attic, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital because of a medical condition, Wichita police Sgt. Travis Rakestraw said.

The man, alone inside, didn't resist, Rakestraw said.

Police had information that the 37-year-old Wichita man was a gang member and possibly had guns in the house, in the 1500 block of North Market, Rakestraw said.

Before police surrounded the house, the man briefly exited a back door, then went back in.

After he didn't respond to repeated attempts by police to communicate with him, police entered the home and found him in the attic.

Nearby Irving Elementary, at 1642 N. Market, was placed in a lock-down as a precaution.
