The search continued Tuesday evening for a man suspected of fatally shooting one man and wounding another Monday in south Wichita.
Someone walked up to a white Buick parked next to Perfection Auto, 4150 S. Broadway, shortly after 5 p.m. and fired several times, killing 41-year-old Stephen Smallwood in the passenger seat and wounding a 37-year-old man in the driver's seat, Lt. Ken Landwehr said.
"At this point in time, we do not know the motive for this shooting," Landwehr said. "It does not appear to be a robbery."
Both shooting victims were taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. Smallwood, the owner of Perfection Auto, died at 6:09 p.m.
The other victim, a Perfection customer who was driving a loaner car while his vehicle was being worked on, is expected to recover, Landwehr said.
Both men were shot multiple times, he said. Several employees were working at Perfection and at a next-door business, but no other injuries were reported.
"They've all been interviewed," Landwehr said.
Witnesses at Brown's Tire and Custom Wheel Center, 4203 S. Broadway, reported seeing a white SUV, perhaps a GMC Envoy, pull up and park on Broadway about six minutes before the white Buick arrived at Perfection Auto.
The man in the Envoy got out and walked more than 200 yards to the east down a long driveway, Landwehr said. The same man was seen returning to the Envoy, then driving north on Broadway and east on MacArthur Road.
None of the employees at Brown's Tire saw the shooting, Landwehr said.
One witness said the suspect was wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt that had what may have been dollar signs on it, Landwehr said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Police Department's homicide section at 316-268-4181 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
Tips may also be sent to Crime Stoppers online at www.wsccs.com or by text via CRIMES (274637). Begin the message with TIP217.
This is the 17th homicide of the year in Wichita, Landwehr said.
