Law enforcement officers are still looking for two men suspected of robbing a bank in northwest Wichita on Monday morning.
The armed men came into the lobby of the Sunflower Bank in the 8700 block of West 21st Street, near Tyler, at about 10:15 a.m. A teller was hit on the head with the butt of a gun, Capt. Rusty Leeds said, but he was not seriously injured.
The men then left from the drive-through parking lot in a maroon Dodge Magnum, authorities said. Witnesses reported seeing a backpack tossed onto Central from what appears to have been the suspects' vehicle, Leeds said.
Other witnesses reported a vehicle of that description stopping near townhomes at West Street and 31st Street South. Two men ran from that vehicle and eventually disappeared into the neighborhood east of the complex, Leeds said.
Never miss a local story.
Cleaveland Traditional Magnet Elementary, near 33rd South and West Street, was in lockdown for about 90 minutes following that report, Wichita school district officials said.
Police also blocked several streets east of the complex, but a search of the area turned up no suspects.
The streets were reopened to traffic before 1 p.m.
