A 27-year-old Haviland man ended up in the hospital after his truck was hit by a train Thursday.
The man, Rickus Te-Baerts, didn’t yield to the Union Pacific train as he approached a railroad crossing about 2 miles west of Haviland on 47th Avenue, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report. The train struck the 2008 International truck as it was traveling east at 6:45 a.m. The train tracks in that area run alongside U.S. 400.
Te-Baerts was taken to the Kiowa County Hospital for treatment of injuries, the highway patrol said. The train engineer wasn’t harmed.
