Grass fires kept firefighters busy on a windy Sunday afternoon in Wichita area

With temperatures reaching 99 degrees and winds gusting from the south, conditions were dry enough to cause some problems.

Wichita and Sedgwick County firefighters were kept busy answering calls on grass fires throughout the area.

The first call was reported at 12:48 p.m. as a fire in the frontyard at 3233 S. Blue Lake Court, said a dispatcher for the Sedgwick County 911 system. Grass fires on K-254 between 143rd and Greenwich and in the same area on 61st Street North also kept firefighters busy, as did a trash fire at Lake Afton.

At least eight calls were received by 911, the dispatcher said.

With temperatures reaching 99 degrees and winds gusting from the south between 40 and 46 mph, conditions were dry enough to cause some problems, said Jackie Ritzman, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Wichita.

Wichita has a slight chance for rain Sunday night into Monday morning and another chance Monday afternoon.
