Two teenagers were injured — one critically — in a collision on U.S. 50 in Harvey County involving a semi and a car Wednesday night, authorities said.
The collision was reported at 6 p.m. two miles north of Halstead on U.S. 50, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Jade Pepper-Hachenberger, 18, of Hutchinson had just passed several vehicles while traveling east on U.S. 50 when she tried to turn onto Halstead Road, according to an accident report filed by the highway patrol. She was unable to make the turn, so she attempted to turn around.
Her two-door Pontiac was struck on the driver’s side by the last vehicle she had passed — a semi trailer-truck. Pepper-Hachenberger was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where she was in critical condition Thursday morning.
A passenger in her car, 17-year-old Irsa Alvarado of Hutchinson, was taken to Newton Medical Center. She was no longer a patient as of early Thursday morning, according to the hospital. A second passenger in the car was unhurt.
The driver of the semi was also not injured in the collision.
