A 47-year-old Wichita man who went underwater while swimming at Santa Fe Lake on Sunday night later died, authorities said.

Tinajera Campos was swimming with friends at about 8 p.m. Sunday when he began to gag or vomit in the water, Augusta Police Chief Tyler Brewer said in an e-mail response to questions. Campos then went under the surface of the water.

By the time authorities arrived, Campos had been found and was being taken to the shore of the swimming area. Lifesaving efforts were begun and he was taken to Kansas Medical Center in Andover. He was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses estimated Campos was under the water for about four minutes.

An autopsy was conducted Monday morning to confirm the cause of death, Brewer said. A preliminary cause of death has not yet been released.
