Wichita police on Monday identified a 28-year-old woman who died after falling through pond ice at Chisholm Creek Park.
A police report identified her as Erika L. Owen. She died at the scene, police Lt. James Espinoza said.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the ice-covered pond, which is at the north end of the park, north of K-96 and west of Woodlawn.
Espinoza said the woman had gone to walk her dog and ended up chasing after her dog onto the frozen pond. The dog fell through first, then the woman fell through, he said. Witnesses said the woman was about 25 feet from the shore. A couple reported the incident to 911.
Someone saw the woman “submerge under the ice and not come back up,” a police report said.
The incident was reported at 2:59 p.m. Sunday, and firefighters recovered her body at 3:55 p.m., the police report said.
Sedgwick County firefighters arrived first, and crews had rescuers in the water quickly, said Wichita fire Battalion Chief Stuart Bevis. Firefighters stayed in the active-rescue mode until about 3:30 p.m., then switched to recovery mode, Bevis said.
The woman’s fiance arrived at the scene and notified the woman’s father, the report said.
Every year, there is a tragedy involving someone falling through ice, Espinoza said.
It’s always better to call 911 first and use extreme caution around ice, he said.
Bevis, the fire official, said, “No ice should be considered safe to walk on.”
