Bricks and steel from the old downtown YMCA building near Third and Market began tumbling down Monday morning. Workers running heavy machinery began knocking it down, a process that, along with paving the area over for a parking lot, will take until mid-Spring, Greater YMCA officials said.
In the meantime, YMCA members can park in some spaces at the First Baptist Church and Salvation Army, south of the YMCA. The YMCA leased some spaces there, said Shelly Conrady, a spokeswoman for the YMCA.
The demolition and paving will take until mid-Spring because the group is trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible, Conrady said. Their goal is to recycle at least 75 percent of the old building’s steel and bricks.
