The 18th annual Battle of the Badges, which helps raise awareness for blood donations during the holidays, got under way Thursday.

Firefighters and law enforcement officers conduct a friendly competition during the blood drive, which runs through New Year’s Day. Blood donations tend to slow during the holidays, so local Red Cross officials hope the drive will help spur more donor participation.

Those donating will receive a free T-shirt. People can donate at the Wichita Blood Donor Center at 707 N. Main, and from 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 28 at Fire Station No. 21 at 2110 N. 135th St. West or Fire Station No. 6 at 1010 N. 143rd St. East.
