A 42-year-old woman is in serious condition at a local hospital with a head injury after she was struck by a motorcycle early Thursday morning in south Wichita, authorities said.
The woman was crossing the street with a friend shortly after 2:15 a.m. when she was hit by the northbound motorcycle on Market near Harry, Lt. Doug Nolte said.
"They were not at the crosswalk," Nolte said. "They were crossing in the middle of the block."
Both women appeared to be intoxicated, Nolte said. The 48-year-old man on the motorcycle was returning home from work at the time of the collision.
The victim was knocked back and hit her head on the pavement, Nolte said. She was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis.
Her companion was not hit by the motorcycle and declined medical treatment. The rider was thrown from his motorcycle but not injured, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said.
He was wearing tinted eye protection, Nolte said, and it's possible the tinting may have played a role in him not seeing the two women in the street. That part of Market is well-lighted, however.
There is no indication the motorcycle rider was speeding when the collision occurred, Nolte said.
