A 20-year-old man drowned at a private lake in northwest Wichita late Wednesday night, authorities said.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office reported that Phillip S. Green was with a group of friends who decided to go swimming shortly before 11 p.m. after a barbecue at the former sandpit at 4900 W. 21st St., near Hoover Road.
Green began experiencing problems while swimming, and members of the group worked to keep him above water and then get him to shore.
By the time emergency responders arrived, authorities said, Green was being pulled from the water.

He was unresponsive, and CPR was performed. He was then taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, where he was pronounced dead shortly before midnight, Capt. Annette Haga said.
Investigators are checking to see what role alcohol or weather conditions may have played in Green's death. Gusty winds were prevalent at the time of the incident.
