Members of the East Wichita Rotary Club not only volunteered to serve dinner at the Lord's Diner on Thursday night — they also paid for the meal.
The club applied to Rotary International for a grant and matched it, raising $750 to cover the $1,500 cost of the food.
"They went above and beyond and went out and got their food handler's cards," something that's required for volunteers at the Lord's Diner, said Wendy Glick, director of the diner.
About 70 members of the club got their cards, and about 40 filled the volunteer slots Thursday, said the club's Phyllis Hampel.
Never miss a local story.
A group paying for dinner as well as doing all the volunteering happens eight to 12 times a year, Glick said — a rarity when you consider the diner is open 365 days a year.
More often, groups and individuals give smaller donations covering a certain number of meals, often in honor of a particular person on a particular occasion, Glick said. For any amount donated in honor of a person, the diner sends a card notifying the honoree.
If you want to donate to the diner, send a check to 520 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67214. If you want the donation to be in honor of someone, include a note indicating who the honoree is and the occasion, if any.
If you'd like to volunteer, call Jan at 316-266-4966. There is a waiting list for volunteers at the Broadway location, but the diner is recruiting volunteers for its new location coming in mid-May at 2825 S. Hillside.
The Lord's Diner serves an average of 400 people a night.
