Several mental health organizations will kick off Mental Illness Awareness Week with a reception, exhibits and candlelight ceremony at Newman University on Sunday.
The reception starts at 6 p.m. and the ceremony begins at 7 p.m in Newman’s Dugan Gorges Conference Center at 3100 McCormick Avenue.
Dyane Smokorowski, a teacher with Andover public schools, will speak about her father’s experiences with bipolar disorder and how they shaped how she interacts with her students. Last year’s speaker, John Shuchart, talked about using humor as a way to cope with his depression.
The Wichita chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is one of the main organizations that hosts the annual event.
