Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers onetime aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.
When her 20-year-old son was diagnosed with HIV this past year, the mother says she struggled probably more than he did to accept the news.
“It is hard to talk about sometimes,” she said. “It was hard for me to deal with.”
Because of his illness, the 40-year-old mother missed a lot of work and fell behind on bills.
“Even when I was able to go back to work, I wasn’t able to stay,” she said.
For the first time in her life, she applied for help.
“The bills keep coming and I’m trying to pay off the past due not to mention that I am in the process of filing for bankruptcy and I still need to come up with the money to do that,” she wrote on her application to Share the Season.
Her younger son was in college but had to come back because she could no longer afford to help him out, she wrote in her application.
She says of her other son: “He is really a strong person for this to happen to him at such a young age,” she said. “He has been a blessing to me.”
