United Way of the Plains is taking calls this week to set up appointments for the Laid-Off Workers Center's December session.
To set up an appointment, residents must call United Way's information number at 211 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The deadline to call for an appointment for the December session is Friday.
To qualify for help from the center, people must have been laid off and approved for unemployment compensation sometime since Oct. 1, 2008 — not been fired, quit or on medical leave.
Residents must show they have emergency financial needs and have insufficient personal resources to adequately provide food, clothing and/or shelter. They must also have been laid off from a job in Sedgwick, Butler or Sumner counties, or lived in those counties at the time of the layoff.
Services at the center include budget and debt management counseling, emergency financial assistance for those who qualify, assistance in applying for government programs, job training and job search assistance, continuing education information, food assistance and community volunteering information.
Child care services are available on-site during appointments.
