A 3-year-old boy drowned Wednesday in a lake outside his south Wichita apartment complex.
It was the fourth drowning in June in Sedgwick County, the third involving a child.
Dispatchers said rescue crews were called to the Southlake Village Apartments, 4141 S. Seneca, at 3 p.m. after the child was reported missing.
Wichita police Capt. Troy Livingston said the boy was pulled from the lake two hours later by scuba divers who found him under about 20 feet of water.
The boy wasn't breathing when he was pulled from the water, Livingston said, and rescue crews performed CPR as they took him by ambulance to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
A police helicopter and search dogs were used during the two-hour search for the boy. Livingston said heat-seeking technology aboard the helicopter was not able to detect the boy on the bottom of the lake.
Livingston said the search began when someone told the apartment manager that a 1-year-old was walking in the parking lot.
When they went to the 1-year-old's apartment, Livingston said, they learned that a 3-year-old boy living in the same apartment was missing.
Livingston said he didn't know who was caring for the children at the time or how many adults were in the apartment when the children disappeared.
"Our focus when we got here was strictly to find the child," he said.
