Before gathering at the table for a big meal or settling on the couch for another football game, consider picking up a book — and wiggling.

Educators and librarians are promoting reading and fitness with the featured book for this year's Kansas Reads to Preschoolers event: "Wiggle," by Doreen Cronin.

"It's a fun book that can get you moving, and that's what we hope will happen," said Cathy Gray, director of Healthy Kansas Kids and a former child care provider.

The fifth annual Kansas Reads to Preschoolers takes place this week with readings and other events around the state.

Cronin, who also authored the Caldecott Honor book "Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type," will visit the Haysville library at 10 a.m. Tuesday to meet kids and parents and to read from "Wiggle."

The book features a playful, rump-shaking, hula-hooping pup who teaches readers some of the many ways to move around.

"Do you wake up with a wiggle? Do you wiggle out of bed?" the book begins. "If you wiggle with your breakfast, it might wind up on your head."

The dog wiggles, jiggles and dances with various objects before finally falling asleep.

Gray said she hopes families with young children will check out the book and explore fun ways to get moving. The Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Web site offers ideas for games, crafts, dances and other activities related to the book.
