Last year, Kandi Turner talked about how she wanted to expand her Margaret McHenry Maids to Kansas City.
This year, she’s done it.
“Poor Kansas City, they don’t even know what clean is,” Turner says.
“It seems like Kansas City is such an under-served market in residential and commercial cleaning,” she says. “I just think that there is a lot to be done – a lot that can be done up here.”
Never miss a local story.
Turner, who founded the company in 1997, has opened an office at 7924 Quivira Road in Lenexa.
From that office, she expects to serve throughout Johnson County.
Unlike in Wichita, where the company mainly focuses on residential cleaning, Turner says she’s finding there’s a particular need for commercial work in the Kansas City area.
“I’ve made some really amazing contacts,” Turner says.
“You kind of feed off the energy of when someone new comes in,” she says of people from other companies. “You kind of start motivating each other.”
Motivation is a big part of what is driving Turner right now, she says.
“This kind of challenge … really gets me motivated and excited,” she says. “Then there’s days I’m like, what was I thinking? I’m insane. This is just too much.”
Turner says it’s an easy drive to Kansas City for her and for new staff members who travel to Wichita to train.
“It’s close to home, and we are able to kind of share our Wichita resources with training.”
Turner is already thinking of her next expansion.
“We’re definitely thinking Dallas would be next after we continue to expand throughout the entire area of Kansas City.”
She’s not sure when that will happen.
“We’re on a learning curve.”
Turner thinks it could be within 12 months, though.
“Which may be a little ambitious, but I think I can do it.”
