The Yard is getting ready to expand again, this time with a new parking lot at its store at 725 E. Central.
“We’ve been growing,” says president Ryan Bendell, whose grandfather bought the business from the Beech family in 1946.
The family used to take its excess items from the Beech Aircraft factory, such as desks, file cabinets, propellers and radial engines, to the Yard.
The business still sells aluminum and steel and has an old-fashioned hardware store at its Central site.
In 2008, the company moved its aircraft tool sales to a second site – the Yard Store – at 715 E. 10th.
Every expansion is a careful one, Bendell says.
“To survive almost 75 years, you can’t be whimsical.”
The company knocked down a building near the northeast portion of its customer parking.
“There had been an old, nasty building there,” Bendell says.
Now, he says, “It’s just kind of a muddy playpen.”
All the recent rain has delayed the paving of the lot. Not that Bendell minds, he says.
“I don’t want it to stop raining. We need all the rain we can get.”
