Deb O’Malley had a career selling phone book advertising before taking off to have three children.
When she decided to re-enter the work force, she told her kids she was going to go back to selling for the yellow pages.
“My kids go, ‘What’s a yellow page, mom?’ ”
It made her rethink her decision. So O’Malley searched franchises to invest in and decided on Welcomemat Services.
Never miss a local story.
“It is like a 21st Century version of the old Welcome Wagon,” she says.
The franchise is in more than 50 markets nationally. It provides new residents welcome packages that promote businesses in their areas.
“This kind of seemed right up my alley,” O’Malley says. “It’s just a great way to welcome people.”
Businesses pay to be included in the packages. For instance, a pizza restaurant might include a coupon for a free pizza for the new resident. O’Malley says it’s a way to help businesses get noticed and build loyalty.
O’Malley is starting the service in the northeast part of Wichita where she lives and will expand to the northwest area and eventually plans to add it in Derby and Haysville.
In addition to helping businesses and new residents, O’Malley says that “it’s just kind of something to give back to the community, if you will.”
“I have lived here all of my life and want to show off the city that I am proud to call home.”
