New Covenant United Methodist Church is having a celebration this weekend (check www.newcovumc.org for details) of its new Delano space.
The 11-year-old congregation’s sanctuary, which is in the 1700 block of West Douglas where Al's Old & New Book Store used to be, is about four times the size of its old one in the space it owns next door.
“We were very limited in the other space … so it stunted our growth,” Rev. Cathy Holley says.
Holley describes the church as an “urban congregation.”
Never miss a local story.
“That means we are not financially well off.”
Holley says a larger-than-expected financial gift from a late member of the church almost paid for the entire purchase of the two buildings for “this church that five years ago we weren’t even sure if it would be able to stay open.”
She says she’s hoping to now grow the 60-member church.
“It is our dream now that we have bigger space.”
That’s not the only goal, Holley says.
“We have a big new dream for how God’s going to use us in the Delano area.”
